What Causes Vertical Cracks
Vertical cracks are normally caused by simple material shrinkage. Most vertical cracks occur a short time after construction. The only vertical cracks to be concerned about are those that are wider at the bottom than at the top. Also, vertical cracks in combination with horizontal cracking indicate a fairly serious structural issue. On solid poured walls there are expansion joints to allow for vertical cracking. These joints are for the exact same purpose as driveway joints, which are poured in sections to allow for expansion.
